𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: “𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲.”

We were honored to invite Emeritus Principal Wong from Semple Memorial Secondary School to share her insights with our Fellows on the evolving role of education and the positioning of schools.

Principal Wong highlighted both the emerging opportunities and pressing challenges within Hong Kong’s education landscape. While students today enjoy greater resources and diverse learning pathways, schools still face intense exam-driven pressure, declining enrollment, and issues like “upward mismatch” where students are placed into pathways before they are fully prepared.

In this environment, schools play a critical role by tailoring learning to individual needs, supporting students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), and helping youth navigate personal challenges. Though often overlooked by society, these efforts lie at the very heart of true education.

As Principal Wong shared: 💬 “𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭’ 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘳 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘺 ‘𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩-𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴.”

Achieving this requires time, presence, and unwavering belief. When given the right opportunities and guidance, every child can discover their unique strength.

The session gave our Fellows a deeper appreciation of educational equity and the vital work happening in under-resourced schools. We are deeply grateful to Principal Wong for leading by example. True educational equity begins when we walk alongside the most vulnerable children on their journeys.
